"Dil dhundhta hai phir wahi fursat ke raat-din" — Ghalib Shayari by Mirza Ghalib
Original Hindi / Urdu Verse
English Pronunciation / Transliteration
This celebrated couplet by Mirza Ghalib is an exquisite meditation on the heart's relentless pursuit of idle leisure as a precondition for love's imaginative exercise. 'Fursat' (leisure, free time) is not idleness but the sacred space the heart craves — moments empty of obligation in which it can be fully occupied by the vision ('tasawwur') of the beloved. 'Jaanan' is a term of supreme intimacy for the beloved. Ghalib here argues, with characteristic paradox, that the most productive use of time is time spent in loving contemplation — an argument for the spiritual value of longing over worldly activity.
